Five Ground, Italy

In the season of the grape harvest, in Five Ground, close to Genoa, the vine growers circulate on carriages!

The Five Ground are composed of five coastal villages, classified with the world inheritance of UNESCO:

  • Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

To connect them, of the paths with hillside curve with the heart of the vineyards and the olive groves which relative with the autumn of orange corollas – nets of gathering.

A protected space:
In order to protect the fragile cultivated terraces a pic above the sea, supported by tens of km of stone low walls, Parco nazionale delle Cinque Ground developed durable tourism. Broad of the five boroughs, a protected marine zone ensures the conservation of biological diversity, in particular of the whales, which one can observe with the broad one.

You will take part in the safeguarding of this space thanks to the entrance fee of the paths and by encouraging the local agricultural production. Resulting from the hills covered with vineyards and olive-trees, the wine and oil are the bases of a kitchen turned towards the sea. Accompany the whole by “Cinque Ground”, dry white wine, or famous “Schiacchetrà “, wine of straw considered in all Italy, produced starting from grapes dried on the straw.

Grape harvest at the ancinet style:

“The paths of the grape” remained faithful to the past. To the turning of the small valleys, they are cut by the long notches of the ways with toothed racks. At the period of the grape harvest, the spectacle is ensured by the shuttle of the buckets hoisting the old wine growers and their tools then descending the baskets from grapes.

All the paths “are thrown” in the sea. In the past, one moored the fishing vessel under the projecting vineyards: one reduced the baskets full of grape and the people with the robust arms transported them to the shore.
