According to property information supplier Australian Property Monitors’ latest report, the nation’s main cities had a double-digit increase in rental costs over the past 12 months.
In Canberra, the median weekly asking rents for houses rose from $390 in June last year to $410 in June this year. The 5 per cent rise means Canberra ties with Adelaide for the lowest rise in the country, but the median figure is among Australia’s highest.
For units, the median rose from $350 to $385, a 10 per cent rise.
Renters in Perth were hit with a 25 per cent rise. However, Canberra’s median is higher than Perth’s and is also higher than Darwin, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Hobart, whose medians range from $235 to $350.

There are a number of national parks in the area, such as Nightcap National Park, a world heritage site located on one side of Mt Warning famous for its waterfalls, flora, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies and hundreds of species of birds.
