Masks are used to disguise, confuse, protect, characterize, and give status. They are simple to elaborate and made from all range of materials from common items to precious jewels.

They appear worldwide on young and old faces.

Masks are used in all aspects of arts related susch as:

1. Drama
2. Film
3. Dance or
4. As an Exhibit of Art

I am particularly interested in Venetian style masks as I visited a lot of stores and conversed with the vendor and artists during my trip to Venice.

Masks are worn for many reasons

• Religious and social significance concerned with funeral customs, fertility rites or curing sickness.
• Ritual masks generally depict gods, mythological beings, good and evil spirits, spirits of ancestors and the dead, and animal spirits.
• The wearer is protected against these powers or may be able to petition more effectively.
• If a person puts on a mask representing an animal or evil spirits he can become that being he is imitating.

Nothing easier than to travel to Sri Lanka. Low-size, the country is a true cultural treasure in an exceptional environment.

The capital city is Colombo.

On a chart, one would say a simple water drop fallen from close imposing sound, India. And if the two countries form part of the same spiritual universe, they however knew evolutions historical, religious and socio-economic very dissimilar. Sri Lanka, large like Brittany, is the country of South Asia where it is easiest to travel. Old cities, splendid beaches, mountains, dances, processions of elephants… all is there only enchantment, splendid environment and cultural richness. Not astonishing that Marco Polo is enthusiast!

Fauna and flora with the honor will find there. You will find a diversity impressive species vegetable and animal. The wetland, in south-west, consists of tropical forests and leafy trees, in particular ebony and teak. One sees there also splendid orchids and much of plants used in traditional medicine. The mountainous zone of the center presents a vegetation of plate: forests of rhododendrons, trees moussus…

Fauna is particularly strange: 86 species of mammals (elephants, of course, but also leopards, macaques, jackals…), 54 of fish, 40 of frogs and clamping plates, a broad range of reptiles. The first reserve of the world was created there by king Devanampiya Tissa, as of IIIe front century. J.-C. The English alas cleared the important ones extended from forest for their plantations of tea, coffee and hévéa, but the country always has twelve national parks, of which four only are opened with the public: Bundala, Yala West, Horton Lime pits and Uda Walawe.

Review your English the Singhalese and the tamoul is the two official languages of a country where English acts as lingua franca. Sri Lanka has its own English, largely widespread in the cities. Our Western formulas of courtesy do not exist in Sri Lanka: the word “aaibowan” covers them about all. To say thank you, smile.
